Background

Coláiste Pobail Osraí began in September 1991. It was the result of hard work over two years by a parents’ committee, the then C.E.O. Mr. Brendan Conway, members of County Kilkenny VEC and local politicians. Coláiste Pobail Osraí is an independent unit under the direction of the VEC. The school has it’s own Board of Management, comprising nominees from the VEC, teachers, parents and co-opted members along with the Múinteoir í bhFeighil who is Secretary to the Board.

Ethos

Our aim is the provide a high standard of education through the medium of Irish for our students leading to their academic, moral, personal, social and physical development - all contributing to their development as good citizens. The school is co-educational and non-denominational and offers a balanced mix of academic, technical, artistic and creative subjects.

The Language

Doras Feasa Fiafraí is the school motto which means "The door to knowledge is to question" and it demonstrates completely our outlook on education. Irish is the everyday language of the school. All subjects are taught through the medium of Irish.

The advantages of bilingual education are well recognised as students learn other languages more easily; have fluency in Irish; have access to our rich cultural heritage and are more conscious as a result of our place in the European Union. There is also a strong emphasis on the effective learning of spoken foreign languages at which the bilingual student has a distinct advantage. Irish culture is firmly interwoven into all aspects of school life through drama, music and the language itself.

Sport

A complete physical education programme is provided for each student. The main emphasis is on participation and each student is encouraged to play whichever sport appeals to them. Due to the fact that we are a small school we depend on the talents of all students to field teams. Students play basketball, hurling, soccer and golf.

Activities

We are involved in Gael Linn and Conradh na Gaeilge debates and quizzes, Eolaí Óg, Young Entrepreneur, Public Speaking, Féile Kilkenny, The Presidents Award, Young Social Innovators.
